Just four golfers were able to take advantage of perfect conditions on Saturday (April 27) for the second round of the Barkman Trophy and Shootout.

After a slow start on a frosty and still morning, Jason Lee showed how it was done with a fine net 66, which featured accurate driving and a sure touch around the faster than normal greens. His 76  off the stick - which contained two birdies and an eye-catching even par back nine off the white tees - was also the best gross of the day, making him a deserved winner.

Garth Jameson pushed him close though with a net 67 that contained three birdies including the jackpot for twos on No 5 and No 14. The first was an outrageous chip in from out of the gum trees. His 78 was the second best gross and underlined his rapid progress as a golfer.

A Saturday newcomer, Daniel Allen, finished third with a net 69 playing off a provisional handicap of 18 which judging by his tidy performance will soon be lower. His score included a two on No 11.

Ian Hanford - playing off a 19 - flew the veteran's flag by coming home in fourth with a 70.

Next was the lowest handicapper in the field, Peter Watson, on 75 who match four birdies, including a two on No 11, with almost as many double bogies on the way to an erratic gross 80.

He was followed by Jim McMullan (76), Mike Williams (77) and Jack Denton (77) who grabbed the last Barkman point on offer.

Paul Tunnicliff (79), Barry Rhodes (80) and Mick Leggett (80) rounded off the top ten.

Paul McCrae was once again the best of the 9-holers, posting a net 35 off the back nine, to pip Ali Mawby (36) by one. Neil Howard and Heather Carey were next with 38s.

Hats off to our greenkeeper for an early morning cut that had the greens in superb shape.

Next Saturday (May 4) we play the quarter-finals of the Brebde senior/junior off the blue tees, while those not involved play an Irish stableford, as do the 9-holers.

Given the colder mornings, we will move to a tee-off time of 10am, with the 9-holers starting at noon.
