Annual prize-giving and closing day ambrose

The 2024 season came to a fitting end on Saturday (Nov 16) with a well-attended ambrose followed by a relaxing barbecue and annual prize-giving.

The two major awards went to some familiar faces.

Club patron and former president John Towns received the coveted Rangiriri Kohe Memorial Trophy for Club Member of the Year, while James Campion and Peter Watson shared the NBS Player of the Year trophy.

John was praised for his continued voluntary work not only for our club but for other community organisations. Without fanfare, the 80-year-old is one of the first to put his hand up if something needs doing and continues to be a great source of advice and support to club leaders.

James – our club’s leading golfer – and Peter – the current club captain – shared the Player of the Year trophy for the first time ever after finishing on the same number of points, with Jonathan Tuheke a close third in what was one of the tightest races for years.

James won the senior club champs after qualifying first and he also finished second in the C& Legal Stroke.

Peter won the intermediate club champs after qualifying second and also had a second and three fourths in other competitions during the season.

Other multiple winners were club president Paul Tunnicliff who took out both the Shootout and the Barkman Trophy in a end of season flourish; Jonathan Tuheke who won both the C&F Legal Stroke and intermediate stroke for qualifying top in his grade in the club champs; Graham Galt who claimed the Junior A club champs title and the Junior A stroke; Lewis Wilson who won the Junior B club champs and the Junior B stroke as well as the Pat Melville Memorial Trophy; Andy Isle who took home both the Burns Philp Trophy and the Summer Fedex; Garth Jameson who triumphed in the Stubberfield Cup and the Six-Hole challenge and Paul McCrae who finished both the Summer and Winter 9-hole Saturday champion.

Earlier, 12 teams of club members, family and friends battled it out for bragging rights in our closing day ambrose.

The team of James Campion, Jonathan Tuheke, Andy Isle and Lewis Wilson proved too strong, winning with a net 56.625. Second was the combo of Garth Jameson, Martin Lubransky, Neil Howard and Jack Denton on 58.375. Third was the team of Andrew Craig, Matt Tomczyk, Steve Russell and Graham Galt on 58.75, while fourth was the group of Mick Leggett, Neil McLaren, Richard Pearson and Ray Hopgood on 62.

Our thanks go to all those who took part and helped out on what was a fun way to finish the winter season.
