Bowlers draw first blood

Stoke Bowling Club got the rub of the green to comfortably win the inaugural golf-bowls challenge trophy over Waahi Taakaro on Sunday (April 18).
The canny bowlers showed they could also handle a golf club in shading our team 11-10 in a 9-hole team ambrose in the morning, before as expected dominating the bowls 21-15 in the afternoon for an overall 32-25 victory in what was a thoroughly enjoyable day.
The bowlers received generous handicaps for the ambrose, while our team of 11 golfers were given a head start in the bowls in an effort to make the contest a fair one.
Among our golfers, Lewis Wilson’s team was our best performer with a nett 26, while the team of Andrew Craig, Neil McLaren, Mike Murphy and Cheryl McKean stood out on the bowling rink with a big win in their second game.
Our thanks to the Stoke Bowling Club for hosting us and providing lunch but the biggest kudos goes to Lindsay Brooks who came up with the concept, organised the event, made a trophy for it and worked out all the scores and prizes at the end.
We all look forward to the event becoming an annual one and our club hosting it next year.
