Two new club champions were crowned and the winner of a season-long trophy race found on a climactic day of competition on a balmy Saturday.

Most attention was on the 36-hole senior final between Pete Green and Andy Isle and the 18-hole Junior B showdown between Ian Hanford and Andrew Craig.

Andy - who had earlier upset James Campion in their semifinal - made the better start against the top qualifier in the early morning chill. After losing the opening hole to a par, Andy won No 3 with a bogey , No 5 with a par and No 6 with a bogey as Pete struggled off the tee. But once Pete ditched his driver, he got back in the match, winning No 8 with a bogey to go to the turn just one down after Andy saved a half at No 9 with a good up and down.

It was all square after Pete parred the 10th before he went ahead with another par at the long 12th. After they halved the uphill No 13 with pars, a now dominant Pete - who started  to chip and putt well - won the short No 14 with a par and No 16 with a par to stretch his lead to three-up. He went further ahead when a faltering Andy doubled the 17th to head into their third nine four in front after a 39 off the stick.

The writing was on the wall when Pete won the 20th with a par and the tough 21st with a bogey. To his credit, Andy kept battling as they halved the next five holes, but a costly double at the 27th saw him slip to seven down. The end was nigh when Pete claimed the 28th with a par. A par three half at the next sealed a convincing 8/7 win and a thoroughly deserved first senior title after losing two previous ones.

Andrew started his final against top seed Ian with an ugly nine but he quickly shook it off to play the rest of the front superbly. He got back to all square with a bogey at No 3 before a fine par at No 4 saw him take a lead he would never relinquish. Another excellent par at the downhill No 6 saw him go two-up. He won No 8 with a bogey after Ian made a mess of the hole and then capped off a front nine 44 with a brilliant birdie at the par five 9th to go to the turn four up against a shell shocked rival. A par at No 10 saw Andrew go further ahead, although Ian gave himself some hope by winning the next two with bogies. But he botched No 13 which Andrew claimed with a bogey and he won his maiden title with a neat par at the next for a emphatic 5/4 victory which was rich reward for the many hours of practice he has put in over recent weeks.

Peter Watson and Brendan Doyle had last week won their respective intermediate and Junior A champs.

The final round of the Barkman Trophy and Shootout was also played on Saturday. Peter W went into the final day of the Barkman - which was played over 11 rounds during the season - holding a four point cushion over Chris Louth who was the only player who could catch him. Chris did his best with a net 74 off the white tees which was good enough for sixth place and two points, while Peter scrapped together a 75 for seventh and one point to take the trophy by three.

Gareth Edwards took maximum Barkman points and match of the day honours with a tidy net 72. Craig Barron finished second on countback from Gabriel Tijsen after posting a 73. Aaron Kotua and Paul Tunnicliff were fourth and fifth after also carding 73.

Craig B and James Campion shared the twos money with one each.

Sue Moyle provided the most eye-catching performance of the day, racking up an incredible 24 stableford points for front nine to take the nine-hole honours. His score included a birdie two, which was matched by Warren Green who finished a distant second with 18 points.. Paul McCrae, Andrew Green and Neil Howard were next with 17.

Next week (Nov 1) the course is closed for our annual 27-hole Maitai Masters tournament. Entries are filling up fast so please get in quick if you want to ensure a starting spot. If you can help out either on the day or beofrehand, please get in touch with either our manager Tony Lewis or club captain James Campion.
