Dear club member,

Welcome to the new season. We hope you are playing plenty of golf and invite you to join us on one of our competition days and in the clubrooms afterwards.

Subs

By now all of you will have received your invoice for the 2017-18 season which started on April 1 and runs to March 31 next year. You have until April 20 to pay and can do so by internet banking (our account number is 03-1354-0272446-000. Don’t forget to include your name and reference number), cheque or by eftpos or cash when at the clubrooms next. Please pay by the due date otherwise we will have to cancel your membership until you do. Our subs are good value and we thank you for your continued support.

New members

We are always on the lookout for new members to boost our numbers and rejuvenate the club. They receive a 10% discount on their sub for the first year, and any current member who introduces a new member will get a free club cap or towel as a thank you. We recognise that you are our best ambassadors and would urge you all to get out there and promote the club to your partners, family and friends.

Management committee changes

A constitutional oversight has meant we have had to appoint a new vice president. Richard Pearson takes over from John Hornby who was mistakenly re-elected at our last AGM to a fourth year when a vice president’s term is restricted to three years. John has kindly agreed to stay on as a committee member. Graeme Bird takes over from Richard as the Golden Oldies’ second representative on the committee.

Code of Conduct

The management committee has introduced a code of conduct for all club members, committee members and those who represent the club at events as a way of setting an example of the standard of behaviour we expect and the values we aspire to.

It states:

·         That we act with integrity, honesty and tolerance.

·         That we act in the best interest of the club.

·         That we are courteous and respectful of all club members, visitors and members of the general public.

·         That we display sportsmanship on and off the course.

·         That we lead by example and maintain high standards of personal behaviour.

·         That all employment related matters, allegations of misconduct, wrong doing and serious disputes involving golf club business are referred to and handled through the president and/or the management committee.

Memorandum of understanding

We are still to complete negotiations with the Nelson City Council over an MOU setting down in writing our joint rights and responsibilities. After almost two years of talks we had hoped to have signed an agreement by now but have been waiting on the council to complete consultation with seasonal ticket holders over a new fee structure.

Pro-shop contract

We have formed a sub committee to investigate whether to make a formal bid to take over the running of the pro-shop. The contract comes up for renewal shortly. If we decide to go ahead and the council accepts our proposal, we will call a special meeting of the club to seek your approval to proceed.

Maitai Masters

We again had a successful and profitable tournament on February 25, with a full field, great prizes and good weather A big thank you to all those who volunteered their time to help out and to our many sponsors for their valuable support.

Club draws

Now the season has started we ask that all players wanting to play on Saturday put their names on the starting sheet which will be distributed the week before and then put up on the club noticeboard. You can also ring or email Gordon (waahitaakaro@xtra.co.nz or 5487771) or our club co-captains Steve Russell (stever_882@hotmail.com or 0223146602) or Andrew Craig (ACraig@bridoncookes.co.nz or 0274796808). Please get your name in by Tuesday night so the draw can be made and published on our website and in the Nelson Mail on Thursday. This helps us book tee times at the pro-shop and ensures we can play as a group.

If you are playing on Saturday please register with the club starter by 9.40am at the latest to give him time to make last minute changes to the draw, issue instructions and warm up himself before we tee off at 10am (frost permitting).

We would also ask that those wanting to play on Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning to let Gordon or Richard Pearson (fourrpplush@xtra.co.nz or 5487052) know. If you are playing on Tuesday afternoon, please be there by 1.10pm for a 1.30pm tee off. If you are playing on Thursday morning, please be there by 9.40am for a 10am tee off.

Our website/Facebook page

We have got a newly designed and comprehensive website which includes a video of the course, lots of photos and many other features, including a members section with all the latest results, upcoming fixtures and news. If you haven’t yet visited it please take a look at www.waahitaakarogolfclub.co.nz . All club members should have received a personal login and password which will get them into the members’ section. Remember to save it once you have entered it so you don’t have to remember it again. If you haven’t received your login/password please contact Gordon or email our website expert Barbara Kotua at barbara@themarketingstudio.co.nz . Barb will be holding a couple of short tutorials at the clubrooms shortly for those wanting to learn more. Also, don’t forget to go to our Facebook page under our name to get the latest news and photos. Both the website and Facebook are our shop front so encourage your family, friends and colleagues to take a look.

Coaching

We are still running coaching for juniors on Wednesdays from 4.30pm. It’s free and equipment is provided. We have had a heartening response from kids and their parents, but could always do with more. If you have youngsters or know of any who would like to learn the game, please contact our junior convenor Richard Pearson (fourrpplush@xtra.co.nz or 5487052). He and Graeme Bird with help from Tasman Golf’s Chris Pugh are doing a fine job so please support them any way you can, including helping them out when you have time. To help meet demand, we would be grateful for the loan or donations of surplus clubs suitable for kids and supplies of used golf balls.

Also, for women and men wanting to learn the basics or cure a problem, Nick Loach of Total Golf is holding hour-long coaching sessions on Sundays from 10am for $20 or four for $60. Contact Gordon for more information.
