Bryan Ramsey may be an oldie, but he still a goodie as he proved with a scintillating net 65 on Saturday (Jan 10) to all but wrap up the Penketh Plate.

Playing off a 25 handicap from the blue tees, the 82-year-old drove accurately and chipped and putted well to record one of his best scores for some years.

It means he carries a whopping 13-shot lead into the final round of the Penketh Plate over those who have played all three rounds, leaving only a handful of challengers needing an epic finish to deny him the silverware in the net competition, where your best three of four rounds count which must include the all irons second round.

Bryan - who has shown good form recently - went out in 45 and back in 45 for a 90 off the stick, which included parring the difficult No 18 after his third hit rocks in the riverbed but bounced over into the left rough. He then sank a wonderful chip across the green and up the slope to a back pin for a fabulous four.

His heroics won him match of the day honours on another warm day. Craig Barron is another in form golfer and his net 68 comfortably secured second.

Pete Green - using borrowed woods - shot an impressive 76, which the best gross of the day and snared him third on countback from Andy Isle after both posted net 71.

They were followed by Graham Eggers and Matt Tomczyk with 73 each and Gareth Edwards and Chris Louth with 74 apiece.

No-one managed a two.

Pete finished closest to the pin on No 5/14, while Paul McCrae did the same on No 2/11.

So after three rounds, Bryan leads with a total of 212. Andy and Matt are next with 225 and 239 respectively. Among those who have completed two rounds, Pete (144), Mark Clucas (145) and Aaron Kotua (147) will require something very special to get past Bryan.

Warren Green is another veteran showing super powers as he was again the best of the 9-holers with 21 stableford points playing off a 14 handicap for the back nine. This was just good enough to see off Jim McMullan who claimed second on countback from Andrew Green after both totalled 20 points. Andrew Dean and Richard Pearson were next with 18 points each. Again, no-one managed a two.

Next Saturday (Jan 17) the 18-holers play the first round of the Stubberfield Cup, which is a net plus putts round off the white tees. The 9-holers play a net round off the front nine.
