Playing with partners is always a bit of a lottery, but Mike Savage and Warren Carey made a happy couple at the end of the first round of the Cap-it-all Trophy.

While Mike - playing off a 21 handicap and driving well - scorched round in a net 66, Wazza played the perfect foil with a more than handy 70.

Their team total of 136 ensured they took a commanding seven shot lead into the second and final round, a four ball best ball in a fortnight's time.

Geoff Halkett also enjoyed his day, shooting a net 67 to finish the match of the day in second. His partner Warwick King came in with a 77 to leave them third on 144.

Phil Sellers snared third on countback with a 70 and with Jack Denton carding a 73, they go into the second round in second on 143 and still well in contention.

Jonathan Tuheke's 70 was good enough to secure a  Sloan Trophy start at Murchison tomorrow, although his partner James Campion - and our Sloan No 1 - had an off day with a 76, but they remain an outside chance.

Club president Paul Tunnicliff thought his net 71 could've been better as did his other half Peter Watson who went in the river twice on the way to a 75 and a share of fourth.

Neil McLaren and Barry Rhodes both came home with net 71, although Barry and his partner Richard Pearson (75) are the ones that still are in the hunt in fourth equal on 146.

Dean Goodman (71) was another to shoot under his handicap on the day.

James still managed a decent collect with the only two of the day and the best gross, an 80, as the lower handicappers all had their issues despite the benign conditions.

The final round is on Feb 24 when we will also be playing the Beat The Pro guys from Total Golf.

The best of the 9-holers was Heather Carey with a net 32 off the front nine.

Next week (Feb 17) we play the third round of the Stubberfield Cup, which is a net plus putts round off the white tees.
