Peter Watson and Dave Huntley are through to the final of the Brebde Senior/Junior after a come-from-behind 2/1 win over Garth Jameson and Mike Williams.
Playing on a sodden course from the back blue tees was tough going but all four golfers had their moments in a match where just three holes were halved. Peter had to give Garth five shots, Mike 10 and Dave 14
Peter and Dave won the opening hole with a bogey but Garth and Mike bounced back immediately to take the next two with pars before Peter parred the uphill No 4 and sunk a long putt for a birdie two at No 5 to reclaim the lead. Garth then won the next three with net birdie, par, birdie to race out to a two-up lead which they took into the back nine.
Peter reduced the deficit with a par on No 10 but Mike parred the next to restore the margin before Dave burst into life to win No 12 with a net par. It was all tied up when Garth and Mike made a mess of the difficult No 13. Dave drained a downhill mid range putt to rescue a half on the par-three No 14 and then chipped dead to win No 15 with a net par to edge he and his partner ahead. Peter extended the margin by birdieing No 16 to go dormie. Garth narrowly missed a long birdie attempt at No 17 to extend the match which was halved with pars.
While Peter's net 72 did much of the heavy lifting, Dave's (75) second-nine flourishes provided impetus at a crucial time. Garth (74) played well for long periods after a rough start, while Mike (78) played his part in a very competitive match.
Peter and Dave will play Matt Tomczyk and Maurice Woodhouse in the final at the date to be arranged.
In the match of the day, a par round off the white tees, Lewis Wilson was head and shoulders above the rest of the field in finishing with a +3. He went out in 44 and back with with the same score for an 88, which translated into a fine net 69.
Pete Green's 74 was the best gross score of the day and the only one under 80 and meant he finished second on -1. In challenging conditions, the in-form one-handicapper went out and back in matching 37s which included a two at No 14.
Aaron Kotua claimed third on countback from Andrew Craig with -3 after posting a net 75.
Pete shared the twos money with Peter and James Campion.
Lloyd Moyle took the nine-hole honours with 0 in the par competition off the back nine from Paul McCrae who was second on countback from Andrew Green and Phil Sellers after all finished on -1. Paul and Phil shared a decent twos kitty after both bagged one each.
Next Saturday (May 17) we play the first round of the Individual Matchplay, one of our major club competitions. It will be played off the blue tees. The nine-holers will play a net round off the front nine.
