Pete Green equalled his lowest ever score - a one-under 71 - in a near flawless round on a windy Waahi Taakaro course to surge into contention for Barkman Trophy honours and lead qualifying for the Shootout final.

Playing off a 4 handicap from the white tees, he went out in 35 and back in 36 in by no means easy conditions for a net 67 to claim the match of the day. His stellar round consisted of three birdies, 13 pars and just two bogies.

It was an ideal warm-up for his club champs senior final next Saturday.

Almost as good was club president Paul Tunnicliff who shrugged off a triple bogey at No 1 to sprint home with a 38 for a net 68. It was good enough to see him take a healthy lead into the final Barkman round in a fortnight.

Keri Kotua's 71 was good enough for third, while Andy Isle finished fourth with a 72.

Next were the trio of Craig Barron, Jonathan Tuheke and Bryan Ramsey with 73 each. Making up the top 10 were Grant Thorn, Maurice Woodhouse and Aaron Kotua on 74 apiece.

There was plethora of twos with Pete, Paul , Keri, Maurice, Graham Galt, Warwick King and Mick Leggett all bagging one.

Also played a week before scheduled was the final of the club champs junior B grade between Lewis Wilson and Jim McMullan which almost went the distance before Lewis prevailed 2/1. Jim was one up after four but Lewis won five of the next six holes to tale a commanding lead going down the home straight. However, Jim refused to lie down winning three of the next four holes to cut the deficit to two with two to play. But Lewis closed it out on the 17th with a bogey half to take the trophy.

Paul McCrae cemented his lead in the 9-hole points table with another win after posting a +3 score in the par competition over the front nine. Lloyd Moyle pushed him close before settling for second with a +2. Richard Pearson, Phil Sellers and Heather Carey came in with +1.

So with one round of the Barkman Trophy on October 29 to go, Paul leads with 35. Chasing him are Andy (30), Pete (29), Peter Watson (28), Jim McMullan (25), Maurice (23) and James Campion (19).

The day also doubled as the second last round of the Shootout, with competition keen to make the top 10 final on October 29. Players must play at least nine rounds to be in with a chance of qualifying. Your best nine rounds are averaged below.

With a round to go, Pete (8 rounds) leads the top 10 with a net average of 73. He is followed by Andy (10) 73.66, Peter (9) 74.222, Paul (10) 75.111, Maurice (9) 75.666, Jonathan (8) 76.875, Keri (9) 76.888, Gareth Edwards (8) 77.125, Graham (10) 77.122 and Jim McMullan (11) 77.122.

Those still in contention are Aaron (9) 77.444, Lewis Wilson  (9) 77.555, Craig (8) 77.875, Mike Williams (8) 78.250, Garth Jameson (9) 79.666 and Mike Savage (9) 80.777.

In the 9-hole Saturday competition, Paul increased his lead to 52 points. His nearest challengers are Andrew Dean (36), Lloyd Moyle (32) and Heather Carey (31).

Nest week (Oct 19) we play the finals of the club champs which tee-off at 8.15am and are held over 36 holes. James plays Pete in the seniors, Jonathan plays Peter in the intermediates and Graham will play the winner of the Brendan Doyle v Gareth match to be played tomorrow in the junior A grade.
