Club results for 12/9/26

It was an action-packed Saturday with big fields for both the 9 and 18-hole competitions, a twos jackpot finally struck and the quarterfinalists found in the club champs after the third and final round of qualifying.

There were also Barkman Trophy and 9-hole championship points on offer as well as it counting towards Shootout qualification'

For the 18-holers it was a final chance to make the cut to play the club champs which was again played off the tough blue tees in blustery and fine conditions on a course starting to play more firmerly and with the greens recovering quickly from the recent renovations.

It made for better scoring, with the lower handicappers starting to hit their straps.

In the senior grade, club captain James Campion came good with a 75 for the best gross of the day, which included an outward 37 and inward 38. This took him to top spot with a best two-round total of 156. After a few rusty weeks, Nick Riddell showed much better form with a 76, highlighted by birdie twos at No 2 and 14 and a birdie three at No 18. He finished on a total of 158. And as the only player in the field to slot a two, Nick went home with the jackpot plus a bonus for his twos.

Pete Green also cemented his spot with an 81 to qualify third on 160. He was followed by Keri Kotua (168), Jarrod Huss (170) and Andy Isle (177).

As a result, James and Nick have the quarterfinals off as they earned byes for finishing first and second, while Pete will play Andy and Keri will play Jarrod.

Despite his third round not counting, Gabriel Tijsen topped the Intermediate grade with a sharp two-round total of 170. Peter Watson came in with an 85 to secure second on 173. Jason Lee was next on 177, just ahead of Matt Tomczyk (178) on countback from Bryce Vincent (178). The remaining qualifiers were Graham Galt (185), Graham Eggers (186) and Andrew Bosselmann (186).

The draw will see Gabriel play Andrew, Peter take on Graham E, Jason do battle with Graham G and Matt and Bryce go head to head.

In the very competitive Junior A grade, Harry Ambrose pipped Paul Tunnicliff on countback to qualify first after both finished with a 91 for a best two-round total of 179. Gareth Edwards also shot a 91 to claim third seeding. He was followed by Richard Pearson (184), Blair Joliffe (193), Maurice Woodhouse (193), Kent Yarrall (197) and Brendan Doyle (198). So in the quarterfinals Harry will play Brendan, Paul will verse Kent, Gareth and Maurice lock horns and Richard takes on Blair.

Dave Huntley heads the Junior B grade after a final-round 98 took him to a total of 198, just ahead of Andrew Craig (199). Phil Sellers (203) leads the other qualifiers who include Lewis Wilson (210), Jack Denton (214), Phil Rogers (215), Andrew Dodson (219) and Mick Leggett (226). Dave will play Mick, the two Andrews will clash as do the two Phils, while Lewis and Jack meet.

In the match of the day, a Barkman net round, James took top points with a 69. Nick (71) was second in front of six players on 73. After countbacks, Bryce got the nod ahead of Matt, Peter W, Gareth and Paul who earned the final point. They were followed by four on 74 - Harry, Pete G, Brendan and Dave. Most of these players will have improved their chance of making the top 10 Shootout in October, with just three rounds remaining of qualifying.

There was also close tussle for honours among the 9-holers, who played a net round off the front nine. In the end, Mike De Veer won on countback from Donna Dawson after both posted excellent 34s. Lloyd Moyle (35) was a close third.

There was a four-way finish for fourth between Rebecca Gibson, Lexie Wilson, Ali Mawby and Brenton Sheppard, with the first two claiming the last of the competition points on countback. Andrew Green and Warren Carey was next on 37.

Yet again no-one managed a two, so the jackpot has jumped over the $60 mark, which is an extra incentive to turn out next week.

Next Saturday (Sept 19) the Intermediate, Junior A and B grades play their club champs quarterfinals, unless they have got dispensation from the golf committee. The senior quarters will be played the following week (Sept 26) as four of the players are away on rep duty at the Tasman Quad tournament at Greenacres.

The 9-holers will play a stableford off the front nine.
