Barry Rhodes let his clubs do the talking as he took an early lead in the Stubberfield Memorial Trophy on Saturday (Jan 14).

In ideal conditions off the blue tees, the quiet 28-handicapper shot a quality net 66 to go with 28 putts for a total of 94 in the net plus putts four-round competition played in memory of club stalwart Wayne Stubberfield. He went out in 46 and home in 48 for a 94 off the stick to take a one-point lead into the second round from Andy Isle who came in with a net 71 but took just 24 putts to finish on 95.

Third was Peter Watson who fashioned a net 70 to go with his 26 putts for a total of 96.

He was followed by Mike Murphy (70 + 28) who pipped James Campion (72 + 26) on countback for fourth. Grant Thorn (73 + 26) was next. Andrew Craig (71 + 29), Bryan Ramsey (70 + 31), Paul Tunnicliff (73 + 30) and Maurice Woodhouse (76 + 28) rounded off the top ten.

Grant, Mike and Brendan Doyle shared the twos money with one each.

James shot the best gross of the day, a 75, with Andy and Peter also breaking 80 with 79 apiece.

The best three of the four rounds will decide the winner.

Next week is the third round of the Penketh Plate, which is a net round off the white tees.
