Phil Sellers and Andrew Craig are in the box seat after the first round of the Cap-it-all Trophy on Saturday (Feb 14).
Playing a four ball best ball off the white tees in ideal conditions, the pair carded a nifty net 62 to take the lead in the two-round competition which is played with selected partners.
While Phil did the bulk of the scoring with a fine net 66 - the best of the day - Andrew contributed at vital times, particularly on the par threes, to maintain the momentum. The pair went out in 32 before turning it up a notch on the back nine to come home in 30.
However, right on their tail are Craig Barron and Matt Tomczyk who signed for a 63 after a front nine 31 and a back nine 32. Matt did most of the heavy lifting with a net 67 but Craig did his bit by being all square for the par threes, which included a birdie two at No 11.
Sharing third are Aaron Kotua and Gabriel Tijsen and the pairing of Graham Eggers and Barry Rhodes who each posted team scores of 65. Gabriel - who was playing the the first time for almost two months - led with a tidy 71, while Barry (71) and Graham (72) complemented each other well.
Further back are Geoff Halkett and Gareth Edwards on 66, the same score that Garth Jameson and Neil McLaren returned. Next were Peter Watson and Chris Louth on 67. At the back of the field - which was smaller than usual as some club members were playing the Waimea Open at Greenacres - were Andy Isle and Lewis Wilson and Bryan Ramsey and Mick Leggett who posted 71 apiece.
The second and final round will be an individual net round off the blue tees in two weeks time, with the winner being the team with the lowest three-score total.
Four players shared the twos money, with Craig, Garth, Bryan and Graham slotting one each, while Gabriel finished closest to the pin on No 2/11 and Peter - whose 79 off the stick was the best gross of the day - did likewise on No 5/14.
Neil Howard's good run of form continued as he carded a net 32 off the back nine playing off a 12 handicap to be the top 9-holer for the day. After starting with an eight on No 10, he then proceeded to play the next eight holes in just five over par.
Mike De Veer took second with a net 34, while Paul Tunnicliff claimed third on countback after he and Warren Green both shot 35..
Jack Denton pouched the biggest collect of the day, with a lucrative birdie two on No 14, which was the first two recorded for some weeks by the 9-holers.
Next Saturday (Feb 21) the 18-holers play the third round of the Stubberfield Cup, which is a net plus putts round off the white tees. The 9-holers play a net round off the front nine.
