Club results for 14/3/26

  • Peter Watson

Peter Watson defended his Stubberfield Cup crown despite saving his worst for the last round on Saturday (March 14).

However, he had built up such a lead in the net plus putts summer competition over the first three rounds that he could afford to drop his final score and still win comfortably.

With the winner decided by the best three-round total, the veteran leftie's total of 293 (103, 94, 96) was five better than James Campion (298 - 101, 95, 102) in second place.

Peter benefited from a disappointingly small field, the absence of some of his nearest rivals for the fourth round and those that teed off being unable to post a really low score to challenge him. It was the third time he has won the Stubberfield Cup in four years, with his other victories coming in 2023 and 2025

Third equal this year were Andy Isle and Bryan Ramsey on 300 followed by Barry Rhodes (301), Neil McLaren (302) and Matt Tomczyk (303).

Fresh from his heroics at the recent West Coast four-course challenge where he finished second on countback, Matt carded the best final round score of 100 (net 70 and 30 putts) from the blue tees, with Bryan (72+29) second and James (73+29) taking third on countback from Mick Leggett (74+28). Matt's stellar play over the last two weeks has seen his handicap cut by two to 12.

James - who recorded the best gross of 79 - slotted the only two of the day, at No 11, while Peter finished nearest the pin on No 5/14.

Paul Tunnicliff returned to the winner's circle with a narrow victory in the nine-hole competition, which was a net round off the back nine.

He shot a neat 41 off the stick for a net 34, which was good enough to pip Warren Green (35) by one. Third was John Dixon (36), with Mark Sherlaw taking fourth on countback from Andrew Green after both came in with 37. They were followed by Lloyd Moyle, Steve Turnell and Paul McCrae on 38. Warren bagged the only two, at No 11.

Warren's second place secured him the Summer 9-Hole Trophy. He finished the 14-round competition with 23 points, just two ahead of his son Andrew (21) and defending champ Paul McCrae (18).

Next Saturday (March 21, Waahi Taakaro hosts it annual three-person ambrose scramble, which tees off at 9am.
