Bryce Vincent and Paul Tunnicliff will meet in the final of the Individual Matchplay next Saturday (June 21) after comfortable wins over higher handicapped rivals in their semifinals.
Bryce was only one-up against Ian Hanford at the turn but pulled away early on the back nine to ease to a 3/2 victory. Both players found it tough going in the muddy conditions off the back blue tees, with Bryce - who had to give Ian eight strokes - shooting a net 77 playing off a 14 handicap to get the job done.
Bryce won the opening hole with a bogey but Ian parred No 2 to strike straight back. Bryce restored his lead with a bogey on the long No 3. They halved the next three before Ian got it back to even with a par on No 7 only for Bryce to edge ahead again with a bogey on No 9. The decisive break came when Bryce won No 11 with a par and No 12 with a bogey. He gave one back after double bogeying the uphill No 13 but restored his three-hole buffer with a bogey on No 15 that Ian made a mess of. The match ended on No 16 which they shared with bogies.
It was a similar story for Paul against Phil, with Paul just one ahead after the front nine before he won the next five to stroll to a 6/4 win. Starting with a six stroke disadvantage, Paul began strongly by winning the first two holes with a bogey and a par. Phil hit back by taking No 3 with a bogey only to slip two behind again when Paul parred the short No 5. It was short-lived as Phil won No 7 and 8 with bogies. Paul then began his victory march by winning No 9 with a bogey. As Phil began to struggle, Paul took the next two with a bogey and par. A double bogey at No 12 was still good enough for the win and a bogey at No 13 took him to five up and dormie. Another winning bogey at the par-three No 14 saw Paul - who shot a net 73 playing off a 18 handicap - coast to victory.
In the match of the day for those not involved in the Individual Matchplay, Chris Louth - aided by a jackpot with twos at No 2 and No 11 - took the honours with 36 stableford points playing off the white tees. An inward nine of 47 where the 28-handicapper reaped 21 points saw him storm to victory over Mike Williams who claimed second on countback from Maurice Woodhouse after both came in with 33 points. Keri Kotua pipped Andy Isle for fourth after both finished with 31 points.
Garth Jameson brightened his day with a two at No 14.
Richard Pearson headed the nine-holers with a solid 17 points for the back nine. Andrew Dean was second with 16, while Andrew Green edged his dad Warren for third on countback after both finished with 15.
Next Saturday (June 21) Bryce and Paul do battle again off the blue tees to decide who is Individual Matchplay champion, while everyone else will play a net round off the white tees. The nine-holers will play a net round off the front nine.
