The Individual Matchplay got underway on Saturday with all but one match played off the blue tees close-run affairs.

Twenty four players entered, with the first round of the knockout competition featuring six matches, while the remaining received byes.

At the top of the draw Pete Green got the better of his Sloan teammate Craig Barron 5/4 with a devastating back-nine surge where he won five holes in a row after they were all square at the turn. Pete came home in a one-over 37 which included a two at No 14 to clinch victory.

Barry Rhodes defeated Neil McLaren 2/1 by winning two of their last three holes. One up after nine, Barry then saw Neil draw level with four to play before puling away again.

Ian Hanford had to go to the 19th hole before he subdued Mike Kirkwood. While neither were at their best, Ian gritted it out for the win.

Keri Kotua was too steady for Mark Clucas down the home stretch, prevailing 3/1. Keri's back nine of 40 was instrumental in his victory.

Aaron Kotua matched his brother's effort with a 2/1 win over Phil Sellers. Phil was one-up after nine but Aaron won four holes on the trot and then withstood a fightback from Phil to advance.

In the last match, Chris Louth was taken all the way by Graham Eggers before sneaking through 1-up.

So in the second round to be played this Saturday (May 23), Pete Green plays Maurice Woodhouse, Barry Rhodes takes on James Campion, Ian Hanford is up against Gabriel Tijsen, Keri Kotua verses Jarrod Huss, Aaron Kotua and Richard Pearson do battle, Chris Louth and Andrew Craig lock horns, Matt Tomczyk goes through on a bye and Lewis Wilson and fellow leftie Peter Watson meet again.

In the match of the day for those not involved in first round action or unavailable for future rounds, Andrew Craig took the honours on countback from Andy Isle after both shot meritorious net 72s off the blue tees. Richard Pearson finished third on countback from Mo Woodhouse after both posted 75. They were followed by Lindsay Brooks with a 76. Gabriel and Richard shared the twos money with Pete. Closest to the pin was won by Matt Tomczyk.

Rebecca Gibson showed the men a clean pair of heels to win the 9-hole stableford competition off the front nine with a fine 20 points. Jack Denton claimed second with 18, with Peter Van Den Bogaardt finishing third on countback from Warren Carey and Mike De Veer after all carded 17 points.

Next Saturday (May 23) the match of the day for those 18-holers not involved in the Individual Matchplay is another net off the blue tees, while the 9-holers play a par round off the back nine.
