Club results for 16/8/25

The club champs qualifying curse struck all but a few golfers again on Saturday (Aug 16) despite good weather conditions.

Maybe it was the challenge of playing off the back blue tees or some tight pin placements on our now slick greens but scoring was generally poor for the first of three qualifying rounds, which also doubled as the first round of the Stroke and counted towards the Barkman Trophy and Shootout. In fact, it was a wonder that more than two players didn't get awarded the cricket bat for their high scoring.

Brendan Doyle was the notable exception: playing off a 21 handicap, he was the only golfer in the field to better his handicap with a tidy net 70 which saw take the early lead in the Stroke and get his nose in front in the junior A division.

In the junior B division, Ian Hanford was almost as good in finishing second with a net 72 playing off a 24.

Another junior A grader, Gareth Edwards, rediscovered some form with a 74 which was good enough for third, while Maurice Woodhouse (junior A) took fourth on countback from the leading senior James Campion after both recorded 75.

Next was Chris Louth (junior B) with a 76 and he was followed by Graham Eggers (junior A) who took the final Barkman point on countback from the top intermediates Peter Watson and Matt Tomcyzk after they all came in with 77.

Surprisingly, no-one bagged a two among the 18-holers and the 9-holers. And nobody broke 80 off the stick, with James the best with a 81.

The following handicap range has been set for the four grades: senior, up to 10; intermediate, 10.1-16; junior A, 16.1-22; junior B, 22.1 +. Currently there are four seniors entered, seven intermediates, eight junior As and eight junior Bs, although it is possible more will enter for the next two qualifying rounds on August 29 and September 13. Players have to play at least two of the qualifying rounds to qualify for the top eight playoffs which start on September 20.

Th 9-holers showed much better form off the white tees, with the ageless John Dixon heading the field with 22 stableford points for the front nine. Lloyd Moyle finished a close second on 21 points, with Jimmy Gargiulo and Andrew Dean taking the final points on countback from Paul McCrae after all totalled 19 points.

Next week (Aug 23) we revert to the white tees for another round of the Barkman Trophy and Shootout, while the 9-holers play a par round off the back nine.
