Qualifying for the club champ playoffs is always a stern test, particularly in heavy winter conditions off the back blue tees.

However, while many struggled to put together a half decent score on a gloomy Saturday (Aug 17), three golfers showed what could be done.

Phil Sellers got the jump on his fellow Junior A graders with a tidy 91. His eye-catching net 69 saw him win the net round of the day, take maximum Barkman Trophy points and lead the C & F Legal Stroke after the first round

Lewis Wilson took an early lead in the Junior B division, with a 94. His net 71 was good enough for second place on countback from Dean Goodman (net 71) whose 81 off the stick saw him sit third in the Seniors.

Peter Green - fourth in the net with 73 - shares the lead among the big boys with James Campion after both posted 79s.

Mike Williams got his Junior A campaign off to a strong start with a 91, which also meant his net 73 was good enough for fifth on the day.

Andy Isle (Senior) also recorded a net 73 to come home in sixth, while Jonathan Tuheke (Intermediate) overcame a rough start to post a net 74 for seventh and take the last Barkman point on offer.

Richard Pearson (74), James Campion (74) and Brendan Doyle (75) rounded out the top ten.

Mike, Jonathan and Brendan shared the twos money, with one each.

As well as being the first of three qualifying rounds for the club champs playoffs, it also doubled as the first of four rounds of the C & F Legal Stroke and counted towards the year-long Barkman Trophy and Shootout qualification.

So far five players are contesting the Senior division (0-10 course handicap, 10 have entered the Intermediate grade (11-16), 13 are in the Junior A division (17-22) and five are vying for Junior B (23+) honours. There is still time for others to enter qualification , although they must play the remaining two rounds on August 31 and September 14. The best two of the three rounds count towards qualification for the playoffs.

Lloyd Moyle was the best of the 9-holers, recording 21 stableford points for the front nine, one better than Andrew Dean (20).

Next week (Aug 24) we play the eighth round of the Barkman and Shootout off the white tees, while the 9-holers play a net round off the back nine.
