- Peter Watson
The first of our 2025 club champs has been found, with Peter Watson taken to the 34th hole before prevailing 3/2 over Bryce Vincent in the intermediate final played today (Oct 18).
The 71-year-old leftie should have wrapped it up earlier but missed a succession of short putts to keep his younger rival in the match. It was Peter's third club title after winning the senior final in 2022 and the intermediate final last year.
In the end, Peter - who used a cart to protect an aching hip - proved more accurate off the tee and consistent with his irons and wedges. Both men - the top two seeds in their grade - played played some decent golf to finish just over their handicaps in conditions that got breezy as the day wore on.
Bryce drew first blood by winning the second hole with a par after Peter missed a short putt but it was the only time in the match that he would lead.
Peter struck back immediately by parring the long No 3 and uphill No 4 to grab the lead. He repeated the dose with pars at No 6, No 7 and No 8 to streak out to a four up lead as Bryce rode the bogey train. However, Bryce sunk a 30 footer on the 9th for an unlikely par to trim the lead to three on a front nine which saw Peter go out in 40.
Bryce started to play better on the second nine, winning No 12 with a par five and No 15 with a bogey as he headed to the lunch break just one down after a second nine 42.
A solid up and down for a par at their 19th saw Bryce draw level but he hit his tee shot out of bounds at the next to gift the lead back to Peter who went two ahead after Bryce doubled the tough 22nd. He recovered with a winning par at the short 23rd to stay very much in touch. After halving the next three holes, Bryce again got back to even with another lengthy putt for par on their 27th hole with both golfers shooting 43 for their third nine.
Two more halves followed as they started their final nine. Peter finally sunk a decent putt for a par five to claim No 30 and he piled on the pressure by winning the uphill next with a bogey. He should have gone three up but must a tiddler at No 32 but made amends at No 33 with a great drive and solid second to go dormie as a wilting Bryce found OB off the tee.
It was all over at the next when Peter sunk a 16 ft putt for a par for a half with Bryce in close.
The other finals - Pete Green verses Andy Isle in the senior grade and Ian Hanford up against Andrew Craig in the senior B division - will be played next week, while the golf committee will decide the outcome of the Junior A clash between Brendan Doyle and Lewis Wilson after Lewis was unavailable.
In the match of the day, a net round off the blue tees, Ian Hanford warmed up for his final with a fine net 69 to take the honours ahead of Pete Green who posted a 70, which included a birdie two at No 5. Roma Elkington finished third with a 73. Pete G's impressive 76 off the stick was the best gross of the day.
Dan Allen led a good contingent of 9-holers home with a net 36 off the back nine. James Mead edged Jimmy Gargiulo for second on countback after both carded 37.
