It started shakily but ended splendidly for Pete Green who stormed home to win the first round of the Stubberfield Cup on Saturday (Jan 18).
On an ideal day for golf, Pete made a far from ideal start to his round off the white tees, sliding to six over after seven holes, but the four handicapper then flicked the switch to birdie five and par two of the next seven holes before finishing with another four pars for a scarcely believable one over 73. His purple patch started with consecutive birdies on No 8, 9 and 10 followed by another at No 12. He then drained a long downhill putt at the par three No 14 for a fifth. His back nine included eight one-putts, including the last seven holes as he complemented accurate driving with some deft chipping and clutch putting.
His performance perfectly matched the net plus putts competition, which is played over four rounds with the best three counting. Pete's total of 94 (net 69 and 25 putts) was two better than Neil McLaren (68+28) who shaded Gareth Edwards (69+27) for second due to his better net after both finished with a total of 96.
James Campion returned to form with 71 off the stick - which include an eagle at No 10 and birdies at No 7 and 17 - and a total of 97 (68+29) to snatch fourth from Lewis Wilson (70+27) on countback.
Next were Duncan Isle who recorded the best net of the day, a 66, to go with 32 putts for a 98. He was followed by Keri Kotua (70+29), Peter Watson (72+28) and Andy Isle (72+29), while Steve Russell (75+27) secured a welcome top 10 spot.
The best putters on the day were Jason Lee and Jonathan Tuheke with 24 each but they finished down the field.
The twos were shared by Duncan, Pete, Jonathan and Bryan Ramsey with one each.
Four golfers shot under 80, including James (71), Pete (73), Keri (76) and Andy (79).
The team of Paul Tunnicliff, Ali Mawby and Paul McCrae won the 9-hole three-person ambrose with a net score of 32.669 by less than a shot from a team led by Warren Green.
Next Saturday (Jan 25) we play the fourth and final round of the Burns Philp Cup, which will be a stableford round off the blue tees. The 9-holers play a stableford off the front nine.
