Club results for 19/9/26

There were blow-outs, some bare-knuckle battles and a boilover as the club champ quarterfinals got underway on Saturday (Sept 19).

Andrew Bosselmann produced the headline performance in the Intermediate grade, upsetting top seed Gabriel Tijsen 1-up. Gabe - who played well in the qualifying rounds - couldn't quite recapture that form, although he was two up after four holes. However, the No 8 seed won three on the bounce and went to the turn one in front. They both won three holes over the back nine, with Andrew - who putted well and played to his handicap - edging ahead on No 17. He then kept his cool after a poor drive to halve the last in bogeys for the win.

Graham Eggers kept up with Peter Watson for five holes before the defending champion and No 2 seed pulled away with some steady golf to ease to a 6/5 victory. On the back of some decent putting and wedges, Peter won six of their last eight holes to close it out early.

The match between Bryce Vincent (4) and Matt Tomczyk (5) which started on No 7 was much tighter, with Matt getting to two up after a birdie two at No 14. Bryce got it back to all square but Matt inched ahead again before Bryce delivered a killer finish winning three in a row with a couple of good putts to claim a 2/1 win.

The remaining quarterfinal between Jason Lee and Graham Galt is to be played tomorrow (Sept 20).

Fresh from being made a Life Member at the club AGM held before tee-off, Junior A second seed Paul Tunnicliff completed a memorable day by overwhelming Mark Clucas 8/7. Paul set the tone early by winning his first three holes and never gave his opponent a sniff with some great approach shots and solid putting.

No 3 seed Gareth Edwards was almost as dominant in defeating defending champion Brendan Doyle 6/4. Three up after nine, Gareth was just too consistent and straight off the tee and on the green than the big-hitting Brendan.

For 15 holes there was little to separate Richard Pearson (4) and Maurice Woodhouse (5) as the two veterans repeatedly swapped the lead. All square with three to play, it was Richard who found the extra gear with a bogey and a par to grind out a 2/1 win.

No 1 seed Harry Ambrose got the bye through to the semi-finals.

In the Junior B division, No 2 seed Andrew Craig made no race of it against Mick Leggett, cruising to a 8/7 victory on the back of some excellent play. While Mick played to his handicap, he couldn't win a hole as Andrew was unstoppable and finished with a net 67.

It was even more one-sided in the match between No 3 seed Phil Sellers and No 6 seed Andrew Dodson, with Andrew surging to a surprise 9/7 thumping. Playing solidly, Andrew won their opening three holes and never let up, with his round including a birdie two at No 14.

With No 1 seed Dave Huntley getting the bye, the final match between Lewis Wilson (4) and Jack Denton (5) went down to the wire before Jack rolled over the top of Lewis for a 2-up win. For long periods Lewis looked more likely to win. The leftie was one in front teeing off No 15 but a tenacious Jack won it with a bogey and then did the same on No 16 and No 18 to snatch victory. His net 70 off the blue tees underlined how steady he was down the stretch.

In the match of the day - a stableford also off the blue tees - for those not involved in club champ matches, Andy Isle took top honours with 37 points after shooting an 83, which was the best gross of the day, Sivina Jacobs-Harawira finished second on countback from Dave Huntley after both came in with 34 points. Garth Jameson - who claimed nearest to the pin on No 5 - was next with 33, followed by club president Grant Fergusson on 32.

Mike De Veer continued his fine form to convincingly win the 9-hole competition, which was a stableford off the front nine. Playing off a 13 handicap, Mike recording an impressive 23 points in going round in 44 off the stick. Paul McCrae was again among the leaders, finishing second with 20 points. Next were Marg Parfitt (19), Barry Rhodes (18) and Andrew Green (17). 

Again, no-one got a two with the jackpot now touching an enticing $70.

Next Saturday (Sept 26), there will be two Senior grade quarterfinals between Pete Green (3) and Andy Isle (6) , and Keri Kotua (4) and Jarrod Huss (5), while the rest of the 18-hole field will play a Barkman Trophy and Shootout round off the blue tees.

The 9-holers will play a par round off the front nine.
