Bryce Vincent used a combination of strong driving and clutch putting to overpower Paul Tunnicliff 4/3 in the final of the Individual Matchplay on a sunny Saturday (June 21).

Bryce - who had to give Paul four strokes playing off the blue tees - won the opening hole and was never headed in his quest for a second title. While his golf was not flawless, Bryce carried too many guns for Paul who struggled with his irons and wedges but battled gamely to stay in the match.

The 14-handicapper won the first hole with a bogey, got up and down to halve the next with a par and did it again from a difficult lie over the back of No 3 green to the save the hole with a bogey when Paul missed a short putt for a win.

Bryce sunk a tricky downhiller for a fine par on No 4 to again thwart Paul who had to settle for a half on a hole where he got a shot. Another up and down at No 5 for a par saw Bryce go two up and he extended that by winning No 6 with a bogey after a wayward chip from Paul.

Paul finally got on the board after Bryce drove out of bounds on No 7 and he holed a good putt to grab an unlikely half at No 8 to stay in the hunt only to double bogey No 9 to gift Bryce a three-up lead at the turn..

They halved the par five No 10 with bogies before Paul duffed his drive at No 11 and conceded a par and the hole to Bryce.

It was Bryce's turn to make a mess of No 12 with an eight to give Paul some hope. Just as Paul looked like he was going to win the tough uphill No 13 Bryce binned a 16ft putt for a bogey and a half. He then holed an 11 footer for an up and down par at No 14 to go dormie. It was all over at the next when they halved it with bogies.

In the match of the day - a net round off the white tees - for everyone else, Chris Louth won for the second week in a row. His net 74 playing off a 28 handicap was the best of a small field. Pete Green - playing off a one - finished second on countback from Roma Elkington after both carded 76. Pete's 77 off the stick was the best gross of the day. Garth Jameson pipped Peter Watson for fourth on countback after they came in with 78 apiece.

Jason Lee and Mike Williams shared the twos money with one each.

John Dixon beat Andrew Green on countback to be the best nine-holer of the day. They both recorded net 36 for the front nine. Lloyd Moyle was third with 37, just ahead of the trio of Jimmy Gargiulo, Paul McCrae and Richard Pearson on 38.

Next Saturday (June 28) we play the annual President v Captain Challenge which is a net round off the white tees. Once teams are randomly drawn, the winner will be the team with the best average net score.

The nine-holers will play an Irish stableford off the back nine.
