Bryan Ramsey roared into contention for the Penketh Plate with a fine third-round net 66 on another hot summer Saturday.

With the course starting to dry out and the ball run, the 17-handicapper took full advantage off the white tees to post the best score of the day, which included a very tidy 40 on the back nine.

His effort was just good enough to pip the rapidly improving Garth Jameson who also came home in 40 for a net 67, which included his first two at No 11.

These two players are among the frontrunners going into the final round, with the three best scores counting.

Two shots further back on Saturday was the big-hitting Brendon Doyle who threatened a very low number after an outward 39 only to fade on the back nine to finish with a net 69 for third.

Lewis Wilson made a welcome return to shoot 70 for fourth. He was followed by Aaron Kotua who kept his chances alive with a 71. Next were Chris Louth (73) and Geoff Halkett, Peter Watson and Mike Brien on 75 apiece, while Mike Murphy completed the top ten with 76.

While Andy Isle may have struggled off the tee, he at least had the satisfaction of grabbing the jackpot after twos on No 2 and 14. Brendan, Garth and Geoff shared the remaining spoils.

Next Saturday (Jan 28) is the third round of the Burns Philp Cup off the white tees, which is a stableford competition.
