The start of the summer season on Saturday (Nov 23) saw an immediate improvement in scoring, with most golfers enjoying the warmer conditions and firmer fairways.
Three players in particular shone during the first round of the Burns Philp Cup, a stableford competition played over four rounds with the best three scores counting.
Making the early running was Steve Turnell with an excellent 42 points. The 31-handicapper had one of his better days in shooting a net 66, which included a birdie two at No 11.
Almost as good was veteran leftie Lewis Wilson with 41 points, with his 88 equating to a net 67 and second place on the day.
Bryan Ramsey also played some good stuff in finishing with 40 points. Playing off a 23 handicap, he recorded a net 68 to be a close third.
The two lowest handicappers in the field, Keri Kotua and Andy Isle, also had solid days, with both breaking 80 off the stick in totalling 37 points each to be handily placed. Keri came in with a 77 and Andy with a 78.
Next was Paul Tunnicliff (36), with Mark Clucas and Ian Hanford following with 35 points apiece. Neil McLaren (34) and Garth Jameson (33) completed the top 10.
Despite the recently renovated greens, Steve wasn't the only one to get a two, with Paul and Andrew Craig also managing one each.
Among the 9-holers Warren Green pipped Andrew Dean on countback after both came in with 21 stableford points to take top honours. Sue Moyle (19) finished third.
Next week (Nov 30) we play the first round of the Penketh Plate, which is a net round off the blue tees starting at the earlier time of 9am, while the 9-holers play a net round off the front nine teeing off at 11am.
