Chris Louth's investment in a new driver is paying rich dividends.

Hitting it further off the tee has already shaved several shots off his handicap and seen him regularly win or finish high up in both midweek and Saturday competitions in recent weeks.

He added another victory on Saturday (Aug 23) in the fifth round of the Barkman Trophy, which also counted towards qualification for the Shootout.

Playing off a 27 handicap, Chris shot a 97 for a net 70 off the white tees to win by one from Peter Watson who posted a net 71 which should have been better if not for some putting lapses on a course starting to shed its winter toughness.

Maurice Woodhouse finished third on countback from Gareth Edwards and Andy Isle after all came in with 72.

Jim McMullan (74) and Mike Williams (75) claimed the final Barkman points.

Andy's 79 off the stick was the best gross of the day followed by Peter's 80.

Peter sunk a long birdie putt on No 2 for the only two of the day among the 18-holers. He was matched by 9-holer Mark Sherlaw who bagged one on No 11.

Paul McCrae returned to winning form to head the 9-hole field, recording an excellent +3 in their par competition off the back nine. Warren Green claimed second with -1, while Warren Carey and Mark finished third and fourth on countback after they and Neil McLaren, Sue Moyle and Jimmy Gargiulo all recorded -2.

Next Saturday (Aug 30) we play the second qualifying round of the NBS Club Champs off the blue tees, which also doubles as the second and final round of the Stroke and carries Barkman points and counts towards the Shootout.

The 9-holers play a net round off he front nine.
