- Peter Watson
Six of the eight quarterfinalists of the Individual Matchplay have been found on a day when patience and perseverance were at a premium.
Sunny conditions masked how difficult it was off the back blue tees with few golfers playing to their handicaps.
At the top of the draw, Matt Tomczyk - who started with a seven shot advantage and a sore shoulder - pushed Peter Watson to the final hole before succumbing 2 down. Despite playing poorly for much of the round, Peter led for 13 holes before Matt won two in a row to edge ahead. Peter then sunk two mid-range putts to win No 14 and No 15 with pars and then went dormie with a conceded par on No 16. However, Matt won No 17 when Peter went in the creek before Peter sealed it on No 18 by putting his second over the river to within 17 feet for a gimme par.
Bryce Vincent overcame a horror start to grind out an ugly 3/1 win over Paul Markland. Starting 10 shots to the good, Paul won three of the first four holes but Bryce battled back to be one up at the turn. He parred No 10 to go further ahead but gave it back on No 12 with a double bogey. The next three holes were halved before Paul imploded on No 16 and 17 to hand the match to Bryce.
Paul Tunnicliff trailed Richard Pearson for the opening 9 holes as both struggled with their games. Paul finally drew level with a bogey on No 10 only to slip behind again after a double on No 12. But he got his second wind when it mattered most as Richard faded. Paul won the tough uphill No 13 with a bogey, then parred No 14 and bogeyed No 15 to make it three in a row. He delivered the killer blow with a par on No 16 for a 3/1 victory.
Nursing a dodgy back, Maurice Woodhouse played some gutsy and good golf in defeating Gabriel Tijsen 3/1 who had to give his opponent seven shots. All square after the opening seven holes after starting on No 4, Mo - who carded a tidy net 71 - made the crucial break in winning the par three No 11 and par five No 12 with pars. He went three up with a bogey win at No 15 but lost the next when Gabriel birdied the hole. It was back to three ahead when Mo won No 18 where he got a shot with a bogey five. Gabriel stayed in the fight by taking No 1 with a par. Mo ended it with a par on No 2.
Phil Sellers had to give Barry Rhodes seven shots but it didn't prove much of an obstacle as Phil eased to a 3/2 victory. All square after five holes, Phil then won two on the trot to take control only for Barry to reduce the deficit the very next hole. Phil then won the next two, including one with a triple bogey eight to underline the vagaries of matchplay. Barry got it back to two down but Phil closed it out with a bogey on No 1, their sixteenth hole.
Earlier in the week Mike Williams beat Chris Louth 4/3 to advance.
The two remaining matches between Dave Blake verse Ian Hanford and Keri Kotua verse Pete Green are to be played at a later date before the quarterfinals on June 7.
In the match of the day for those not involved in the Individual Matchplay, Lindsay Brooks proved yet again how handy a golfer he remains with 36 stableford points off the white tees. Playing off a 16 handicap, Lindsay went round in 88 to match his handicap. Neil McLaren claimed second with 34 points, with Dave Huntley third on 32.
Aaron Kotua earned a decent collect with the only two of the day.
Among the 9-holers, Andrew Green won for the second consecutive with 16 points off the front nine. Paul McCrae finished second on countback after also finishing with 16 points. Warren Green and Mike Kirkwood were next with 15.
Next Saturday (May 31) we play the final of the Brebde Senior/Junior between Matt Tomczyk and Maurice Woodhouse verse Peter Watson and Dave Huntley, while the rest of the 18-holers play the third round of the Barkman Trophy and Shootout off the white tees. The 9-holers play a net round off the back nine.
