Club results for 27/9/25
- 27 September 2025
- Peter Watson
Extra holes were required in two of the three NBS club champ matches played on Saturday (Sept 27).
Ian Hanford needed 20 holes before overcoming a persistent Roma Elkington in their Junior B semifinal. Starting on No 4, they were all square after nine as Roma - who normally plays off a handicap eight shots greater than Ian - lifted his game as they each won three holes. It was much the same for the back nine as Ian struggled for consistency. Roma grabbed the lead on their 17th hole with a bogey four as an upset loomed but Ian won the next - the tough No 3 - with a double bogey to extend the match. They shared the uphill 19th with double bogeys before Ian finally got the job done with a bogey four at the 20th.
Graham Eggers performed something of a Houdini act to edge Neil McLaren on the 19th hole in their Junior A quarterfinal. Four down after five to a fired-up Neil, Graham managed to stay in the fight by winning two holes to reduce the deficit to three at the turn. He got the margin back to one at the 12th in winning the hole with a nine to show the vagaries of matchplay. He drew even by parring No 16, then promptly gave it up when Neil parred No 17. It looked all over when Neil needed only two putts from 30 feet to win on No 18 but he left it short then missed a 7 footer for the win. Graham then stole victory with a bogey six at the 19th to advance.
Aaron Kotua made no race of it in winning his intermediate quarterfinal against Matt Tomczyk 5/4. Driving well, Aaron made a fast start to be four up after five before Matt cut the lead to two by the 8th only to lose the 9th to start the back nine three behind. Aaron tightened his grip by winning the 10th and 12th with pars. Matt delayed the inevitable by taking No 13 but it was all over at the next when Aaron parred the short No 14. Aaron will play the winner of the Peter Watson-Garth Jameson match to be played mid week. In the match of the day, a net round off the white tees which also counted towards the Barkman Trophy and Shootout, Keri Kotua prevailed over Peter Watson on countback after both played to their handicaps with 72. Keri had matching 40s on both nines for an 80 off the stick, which was the best gross of the day. Peter finished with an 81 to secure second on a placid day for golf.
There was a long way back to Andrew Craig in third place on 77 on a day of generally high scoring despite the good conditions. He was followed by Barry Rhodes and Chris Louth with 78s and Jason Lee and Lewis Wilson on 79 each.
Bryce Vincent binned the only two of the day, on No 11.
The nine-holers showed how it could be done, with Phil Sellers recording an excellent net 32 for the front nine to top the standings. Lloyd Moyle pipped Martin Lurbransky on countback for second after both finished with 34. Daniel Allen with 36 bagged the final competition point.
Next Saturday (Oct 4) we play the semifinals of the NBS club champs, although some of the matches may be played later depending on player availability. The nine-holers play a stableford off the back nine.
