The winner of the first round of the Penketh Plate had to be decided on countback after five golfers came in with the same best net score in ideal conditions on Saturday (Nov 30).

Despite a double bogey at his last hole, Graham Galt got the nod after posting a net 70 off the blue tees playing off a 15 handicap.

He pushed James Campion - whose 75 was the best gross round of the day - into second, while Lewis Wilson came in third to claim the last of the prizes..

It was tough on Mike Williams and Gareth Edwards who also recorded 70 but were pushed into fourth and fifth respectively.

Next were Maurice Woodhouse and Andy Isle with 71 apiece. They were followed by Steve Turnell (73) and Paul Tunnicliff (75). Garth Jameson (76) finished 10th on countback from three others on the same score.

Keri Kotua and Matt Tomczyk shared the twos money with one each, with Keri getting his on No 2 and Matt binning his second shot on the par four No 15.

Peter Watson marked his return to competitive golf after a medical time-out by shading serial winner Paul McCrae in the 9-hole competition after both finished with net 35 for the front nine.

Next week (Dec 7) we make the trip over the Whangamoa Hill to take on Blenheim Golf club in our annual challenge. Please be at Pollard Pak in Blenheim at 11am for a 11.30am tee-off.
