Gareth Edwards has one hand on the Burns Philp Cup after another impressive round in the summer stableford competition.

The 13-handicapper continued his strong return to form with an excellent 81 off the stick from the white tees to record his second successive 40 points to take a four-point lead with one round remaining.

He again was the model of consistency, going out in 41 and back in 40 for a net 68 in windy and warm conditions on a course still in the midst of a clean-up from the damaging easterly gale earlier in the week that uprooted trees and del-limbed many others.

Craig Barron was another in good form, taking second on the day on countback from Ian Hanford after both came in with 38 points. Both shot net 70 playing off 18 handicaps.

Bryan Ramsey finished fourth on 37 points. He was followed by Garth Jameson (36), Chris Louth and Keri Kotua on 35, and James Campion, Peter Watson, Maurice Woodhouse and Mark Clucas on 34. James's 79 was the best gross of the day.

Garth got closest to the pin on No 2, while Craig did likewise on No 5.

There were four twos slotted, with Peter bagging two mid range putts on No and No 5 for the jackpot, while Garth and Keri drained one each.

So after three of four rounds of the Burns Philp (with the best three counting), Gareth has an imposing total of 118 stableford points, with only Peter (114) and Ian (110) having any realistic chance of catching him when the final round is played off the blue tees on January 24.

Ali Mawby was the star of the 9-holers, bringing her A game in shooting a net 32 off the front nine to win by three shots and gain bragging rights over partner Paul Tunnicliff who claimed second on countback from Warren Green after both posted 35. Andrew Green was fourth on countback from Mike De Veer, Paul McCrae and John Dixon after all came in with 37. There were no twos.

Next Saturday (January 10) the 18-holers play the third round of the Penketh Plate, which is a net round off the blue tees, while the 9-holers play a stableford round off the back nine.
