Two golfers who haven't played competitively for awhile dominated the third round of the Burns Philp Cup on Saturday (Jan 4).

Dean Goodman's last official round was six weeks ago but the 7-handicapper showed no rust in shooting a slick 74 off the stick from the white tees, which included a sharp back nine 34 containing three birdies and just one bogey. His 41 stableford points fully deserved match of the day honours, although Lindsay Brooks pushed him close with 40 points in what was his first competitive round in 10 months. Taking a Saturday off bowls, our former president displayed much of his old touch which bought him such success in shooting 84 playing off a 16 handicap. It included a two at No 14.

Neil McLaren also prospered on a grey morning that cleared to a fine day. His 85 translated to 38 points and third place.

Andy Isle pipped Peter Watson for fourth on countback after both finished with 37 points.

They were followed by the trio of Graham Galt, Ian Hanford and James Campion on 35 points. Next were Craig Barron (34) and Jack Denton and Bryan Ramsey with 33 each.

Apart from Dean, James (75), Andy (78) and Peter (79) all broke 80.

Lindsay and Peter shared the twos money.

With just one round of the competition to go and with the best three scores counting, up to 10 golfers remain in contention. Those with the best two-round totals are Steve Turnell (79), Lewis Wilson (77), Garth Jameson and Andy I (74), Ian H, Jack D and Keri Kotua (73) and Neil and Peter (72).

Lloyd Moyle started the new year by taking the top spot among the 9-holers on countback from Phil Sellers after both posted 17 stableford points for the back nine. Paul McCrae and John Dixon were next with 15.

Next Saturday (Jan 11) we play the third round of the Penketh Plate, which is a net round off the blue tees, while the 9-holers play a net round off the front nine.
