Three of four of the Brebde senior/junior semi-finalists have been found after another knockout round of the matchplay competition with drawn pairs on Saturday (May 4).

Although the weather again was perfect, players had to cope with playing off the back blue tees which added some extra spice to the matches.

At the top of the draw, Dave Blake and Neil McLaren looked to be in total command leading four up with seven to play, but Graham Galt and Mike Williams mounted a stirring comeback to be one down going down the last which they won with a bogey from Graham to force extra holes. However, Dave and Neil prevailed at the 19th to advance where they will play the winner of the match between Jason Lee and Lewis Wilson against Richard Pearson and Warwick King which will be played later this week.

Peter Watson and Maurice Woodhouse were always ahead against Geoff Halkett and Gareth Edwards, with Peter and Geoff doing most of the heavy lifting. Two up after nine, they kept Geoff and Gareth at bay, with Peter - whose short game was on point - finishing it on the 16th with a birdie for a 3/2 victory.

Dean Goodman and Michael Savage got off to the better start verses James Campion and Mark Clucas when James smashed his opening drive against a net pole and had built a two-up lead going into the back nine. However, a birdie on No 10 and a par on No 11 from James levelled it up before Dean and Michael combined to win the next two and then closed it out by clinching No 15 and 16 with pars for a 3/2 win.

In the match of the day, an Irish stableford, Pete Green stormed home with a back nine 38 for a 78 off the stick and 70 stableford points for the win.

Steve Turnell pipped Keri Kotua on countback after both recorded 68 points, with Keri shooting the second best gross of the day, a 79.

Next were Paul Tunnicliff (66), Dave Huntley (65) and Andy Isle (59).

Ali Mawby was the best of the nine-holers with 36 points in the Irish stableford off the front nine, with Paul McCrae (35) and Phil Sellers (34) filling the minor placings.

Surprisingly given the good condition of the greens, nobody managed a two.

Next Saturday (May 11) we play the semi-finals of the Brebde, while those not involved play a par round off the white tees. Nine-holers will play a par round off the back nine.
