Mark Clucas provided the individual highlight on a day when only the most hardy golfers ventured out.
Playing off a 17 handicap from the white tees, he shook off an otherwise average round by slotting birdie twos at No 2 and 14 to bag a jackpot which was at its maximum amount. His pinpoint tee shot to No 14 which settled just four feet from the hole also earned him the closest to the pin prize.
While the rain held off, a swirling wind and cold winter conditions meant scoring was higher than normal, although players enjoyed putting on the greens which were running at a good speed with Andrew Craig and Jarrod Huss also scoring twos. Jarrod saw a long putt for another jackpot hit the pin and lip out.
Keri Kotua took out the match of the day, a net round which counted towards both the Barkman Trophy and the Shootout. His net 74, which included a back nine 40 off the stick, saw him win on countback from his brother Aaron who also carded a 74. Phil Sellers pipped Peter Watson on countback for third after both recorded 77s. They were followed by Graham Eggers and Chris Louth on 78, with Neil McLaren (79) claiming the last Barkman point.
Keri's 82 was the best gross of the day.
Warren Carey was the best of a small field of 9-holers, with an admirable +2 score for the back nine in the par competition. Warren Green continued his good form by finishing second on 0. Mike De Veer took third on countback from Donna Dawson after both came in with -1. No-one managed a two.
Next Saturday (July 11) the 18-holers play the fifth round of the Barkman Trophy and Shootout, while the 9-holers play a net round off the front nine.
Phil continues to lead the Barkman after four round with 25 points followed by Keri (18), Graham (14), Peter (13) and Aaron (12). Of those who have played at least three rounds of the Shootout, Phil also leads with a net average of 72.33 from Keri (73), Aaron (73.66), Graham (74), Peter (75.25) and Chris (76.5).
In the race to become the 9-hole winter champion, Mark Sherlaw leads on 24 points with Lloyd Moyle (21) and Warren Green (18) his nearest challengers.
Good luck to our Sloan team of James Campion, Pete Green, Keri Kotua, Matt Tomczyk, Craig Barron and Graham Eggers who face a must win match against Nelson at Motueka tomorrow (Sunday) to stay in contention for the trophy.
