- Peter Watson
The last four have been found in the Individual Matchplay after a day of hard graft and occasional brilliance, while Warren Carey provided a popular highlight with a jackpot after bagging two twos.
At the top of the draw Bryce Vincent withstood a late comeback from Peter Watson to advance with a 2/1 win. While neither player was at their best in the muddy conditions, Bryce - who started with a three stroke advantage - drove powerfully and holed some nice putts to make the turn 4-up over his error-prone opponent. It included an outward 43 where he won four holes on the trot and featured a birdie three on No 7. Peter then won won No 11 and 12 with pars to halve the deficit but Bryce responded with a fine up and down par from the trees on the long uphill No 13 to go three-up. However, Peter refused to lie down and cut the lead to one by taking No 14 and 15 with a bogey and par. They halved No 16 and then both drove into the creek on No 17 before Bryce ended it with another good up and down for a bogey.
Ian Hanford and Maurice Woodhouse had a ding dong battle before Ian won No 18 to prevail 1-up. Both battled in the conditions in a match where Ian got to 2-up before Mo won three holes in a row to edge ahead and set up a final hole showdown. They started with four halves before Ian won No 5 and 6 with bogies only for Mo to go to the turn all square after claiming No 8 and 9. Ian regained the lead on No 10 but it was fleeting as Mo parred No 11. Ian regained the edge after winning No 12 and 13 but Mo responded strongly by taking the next three with par, bogey, bogey. Ian tied it up by securing No 17 so it all rested on the last. It was all uphill for Mo after he drove into the penalty area and Ian cleared the river with his third. Mo missed a six foot putt to extend the match.
Paul Tunnicliff started nine strokes to the good against Keri Kotua and made them count early as he eased to a comfortable 5/4 victory against his misfiring rival. Paul quickly built a three-up lead after four holes with some steady golf before Keri got one back on No 5 with a par. However, Paul kept the pressure on by winning No 6 with a bogey and No 7 with a par to go four ahead. They halved the next two after Keri could only bogey them, although he parred No 10 to stay in the contest. They halved the par-three No 11 with bogies before Paul put Keri - who had beaten Pete Green 4/2 in their catch-up match earlier in the week - out of his misery with net pars on No 12 and 13.
Phil Sellers made no race of it against Mike Williams, drubbing him 7/5. Phil hardly needed the three-stroke advantage he started with. He won the first two holes, halved the next two where he got shots and then won No 5 with a par three. Another par on No 7 took him to four-up and it was five when he bogeyed No 9 for another win. Mike finally won a hole after Phil made a mess of No 10, but he lost the next two to a par and bogey to go dormie and succumbed on No 13 to a net par.
In the match of the day, a par round off the white tees, Andy Isle was the only golfer to get into positive territory, with his +1 heading the field. His 80 off the stick was also the best gross of the day. Chis Louth finished second on -1, while Graham Eggers took third on countback from Andrew Craig after both carded -2. The biggest cheer, however, went to Wazza Carey who marked his return to Saturday golf with a jackpot after birdie twos - one a chip-in - at No 11 and 14.
Mike Kirkwood was the best of the nine-holers with +1 for the front nine, while Andrew Green was again among the prizes with -1 which was good enough for second.
Next Saturday (June 14) Bryce Vincent takes on Ian Hanford and Paul Tunnicliff and Phil Sellers do battle in the semifinals of the Individual Matchplay off the blue tees. Those not involved play a stableford off the white tees and the nine-holers also play a stableford off the back nine.
