Club results for 8/10/22

The scoring was marginally better for the second qualifying round of the NBS club champs on Saturday as players strived for a better position from which to launch their title hopes.

The sunny conditions made it easier to cope with the juicy rough off the blue tees.

In the senior grade, Peter Green shot the best gross of the day, a 80, which threatened to be better until a couple of late blemishes. He comfortably leads the division from Andy Isle who came in with 84, a slight improvement on his first round effort. Peter Watson improved to third on the back of a much better 82, while Keri Kotua blew out to a 90 to sit fourth.

Richard Pearson continues to lead the intermediate players after finishing with a 91, with Paul Tunnicliff (92) and Geoff Halkett (91) four and five shots back respectively. Jonathan Tuheke (93) and Steve Russell (98) are further adrift but still look certain to qualify for the last eight.

Phil Sellers is making no race to be the top seed in the Junior A grade after recording his second 94. He lies 10 shots in front of Neil McLaren (96) and Ian Hanford (97) who share second, with Bryan Ramsey (107) and Warren Carey (100) also set to make the quarter-finals.

In the Junior B division, Mick Leggett (108) holds a big lead over Greg Mann (112), Barry Rhodes (110) and Chris Louth (113) of those who have completed two rounds.

Those who have played only one round still have another chance to qualify next Saturday (Oct 15) when the third and final round is held. The quarter-finals will be on October 22.

Saturday also saw the second and final round of the C&F Legal Stroke to find the best net total over the two rounds.

In the end it came down to a countback involving three players - Peter Green, Phil Sellers and Mick Leggett - who all finished on 144. Mick got the nod and silverware after recording the best net round, a 67 in the first round.

The day also counted towards the Barkman Trophy and Shootout. Newcomer Garth Jameson took maximum Barkman points on countback from Mike Murphy after both finished with net 71. Peter Watson claimed third on countback from Phil Sellers and Ian Hanford following matching 73s. They were followed by Peter Green (74), with Paul Tunnicliff (75) getting the final point on offer.

In the Shootout, Peter Watson, Peter Green, Paul Tunnicliff and Aaron Kotua improved their positions with just one round to go before the final.

Surprisingly, there were no twos scored so there is extra in the kitty for next week when the last qualifying round of the club champs is played. The match of the day for those not involved will be a stableford off the blue tees.
