Teamwork proved decisive in the two Brebde Senior/Junior semifinals played on a Waahi Taakaro course in surprisingly good condition after the downpour over the two previous days which saw more than 120mm of rain fall.
Unlike the tight quarterfinals, the semis were over early, with Craig Barron/Lewis Wilson spanking James Campion/Duncan Isle 6/5 and Andy Isle/Phil Sellers almost as dominant over Paul Tunnicliff/Mick Leggett in winning 5/4 off the white tees..
After halving their opening hole, Lewis soon had his pairing in front with a par at No 2, with his big-hitting partner Craig doubling their lead with a par on the uphill No 4. Another par from Lewis on No 5 put them three ahead.
With Duncan finding the going difficult, James - who had to give Craig 11 shots and Lewis 17 - had to do much of the heavy lifting but a par at the downhill No 6 cut the lead to two only for Lewis to par No 7 with a shot to restore their three-up margin. Despite James parring No 9, Lewis repeated the dose with his own par to go to the turn four ahead.
The writing was on the wall when Craig parred No 10 with a shot to stretch the gap to five. He did the same at the next par five, No 12, to go dormie with six to play. It was all over at the next hole as James's par was fittingly matched by bogies from Lewis and Craig.
In the other semi, Phil - who played solidly all day - won a messy opening hole to get his team off to a good start, but Paul and Mick combined to take the next two with net pars only for Andy to make it all square with a par on No 4.
Two halves followed before Andy and Phil won three on the bounce to establish a lead that would never be threatened. First, Andy won No 8 with a par before Phil took No 9 with a net par and repeated the feat on No 10. Their progress was briefly halted when Mick parred No 11. However, Phil secured No 12 with a net bogey and No 13 with a net birdie to tighten the noose.
Lying dormie, Andy parred the short No 14 to close out the match.
After losing one scheduled day last month to rain, a date for the Brebde final is yet to be set.
In the match of the day - a net round off the white tees - for those 18-holers not involved in the Brebde, Graham Eggers warmed up for next week's Old Hickory at Motueka with a steady 72 to take the honours. His 86 off the stick included a two at No 14.
Keri Kotua was next with a 75. His gross of 82 was the second best of the day behind Takaka visitor Rob Ancell who shot an 81 playing off a three handicap.
Andrew Craig took third on countback from Peter Watson after both carded net 77. Peter was another to bag a two, with a chip in at No 2.
Mark Sherlaw's good form continues as he was the best of the 9-holers on countback from Richard Pearson after both posted net 34 for the back nine. Richard's score included a two at No 11 and a birdie three at No 17. Mike De Veer finished third on 37, while Steve Turnell and Cory Stewart took fourth and fifth on countback after recording 40 each. Andrew Dean shared the twos money with one of his own at No 14.
Next Saturday (May 16) the 18-holers play the first round of the Individual Stableford, one of our major competitions, so we hope for a good turnout. The 9-holers play a stableford off the front nine.
