  • Peter Watson

Retirement agrees with Paul McCrae and all the extra golf he is playing is reaping returns.

On Saturday (Aug 8) in almost spring-like conditions he could do little wrong, blitzing the field with a +6 score in the match of the day, a par round off the white tees.

A nett 65 (82 off the stick, with two matching 41s) put everyone else in the shade. A feature was his excellent putting on the slick greens, which held up well given the heavy rain over the last two days. It also rocketed him up the Barkman Trophy standings into joint second place after seven rounds.

Mike Murphy finished  a distance second on +2, while Keri Kotua claimed third on countback from Peter Watson (who shot the best gross of day with a 76) after both recorded +1 scores.

Maurice Woodhouse was fifth on -2. He was followed by Dave Blake (-3) and the quartet of Callum Hogg, Andy Isle, Paul Tunnicliff and Jonathan Tuheke on -4.

The trio of Phil Sellers, Mike Murphy and Paul McCrae shared the twos money.

Peter Watson headed the scoring in the seventh round of the Shootout with a nett 70. Next were Keri Kotua (72), Mike Murphy (74), Dave Blake (76) and Jim McMullan (79).

The top 12 in Barkman Trophy standings after seven rounds are : Aaron Kotua 26 points, Paul McCrae and Dave Blake 23, Paul Tunnicliff 17, Mike Murphy 16,  Maurice Woodhouse 14, Alan Church 11, Richard Pearson and Warwick King 10, Tom Weiss, Andy Isle and Barry Rhodes 8.

The top 10 in the Shootout standings after seven rounds for those who have played three or more rounds are: Dave Blake 74.71 net average (7 rounds), Paul Tunnicliff 74.85 (7), Aaron Kotua 75.71 (7), Peter Watson 76.16 (6), Keri Kotua 76.80 (5), Peter Green 77.66 (3), Warwick King 77.75 (4), Mike Murphy 78 (4), Steve Russell 78.42 (7) and Jonathan Tuheke 79.25 (4).
