Playing with just irons proved no problem for most of the players during the second round of the Penketh Plate on Saturday (Dec 14).

The all irons round is a compulsory part of the four-round nett competition but it was no handicap for almost half the field who shot par or better off the white tees in hot and breezy conditions.

It was Jim McMullan's time to shine in the sun with the 44-handicapper coming in with a nett 65 which concluded with a fine par (nett one!) at his last hole, No 6.

Andrew Craig's good run of form continued with a nett 67 to grab second on his own. Terry Hemi finished third with a tidy 69.

Richard Pearson claimed fourth on countback from Lewis Wilson after both carded 70s.Tom Weiss and Rob Willems were next with 71s. They were followed by Maurice Woodhouse, Jonathan Tuheke, Steve Russell and Steve Turnell who all recorded 72s.

There were four twos, with one each going to Jonathan Tuheke, Rangi Kohe, Steve Russell and Paul Tunnicliff.

Next Saturday (Dec 21) is the second round of the Burns Philp, which is a stableford off the blue tees.
