Club results for December 19, 2020

Hamish Cadigan made his Saturday competition debut a memorable one, with a stellar nett 60 to blitz the field in the second round of the Penketh Cup.

What made it even more astonishing it was an all-irons round off the white tees.

The 29.8 handicapper, who has only been a club member for two months, freely admits that he usually loses a couple of balls around when he uses his driver, but was far more accurate when restricted to just hitting irons. He went out in an impressive 42, which included four pars, and came home in 46, with another two pars, to break 90 for the first time in the warm summer air.

His nett 60 matched Steve Turnell’s great round during the club champs for the lowest club competition score of the year. It was 11 shots better than Aaron Kotua, who shot a very respectable nett 71 to claim second.

Three shots further back was Peter Watson on 74. Tom Weiss was fourth on countback from Dean Goodman after both finished with 76.

Stephen Russell headed a quartet on 77 which also included Barry Rhodes, Paul McCrae and Peter Green.

The trio of Paul Tunnicliff, Warwick King and Jack Denton with 78s rounded off the top 12.

Despite some close shaves, no-one managed a two so the pool jackpots to next week, when the match of the day is a par round off the white tees, starting at 9.30am.

Club competitions will continue through the holiday period, but the course will - as usual - be officially closed on Christmas Day (Friday).

Merry Christmas and New Year and happy golfing.
