Jim McMullan made light of the slow and spiked greens to putt his way to the top of the leaderboard after the first round of the Stubberfield Cup.

The 32-handicapper required just 29 putts to go with a nett 75 for a total of 104 to claim the honours on countback from Aaron Kotua (72 + 32) in the nett plus putts format which is played over four rounds.

Dean Goodman finished third (76 + 29) just one back on 105 along with Brad Crabb (68 + 37) who enjoyed a rare Saturday outing with the best nett of the day.

Bryan Ramsey (75 + 31) headed a quartet on 106 which also contained Warwick King (74 + 32), Andy Isle (74 + 32) and Paul Tunnicliff (74 + 32).

The steady drizzle put some people off but it lifted soon after tee-off to provide good conditions, although the wet greens and the back blue tees proved a challenge for many players.

No-one managed a two so it jackpots to next week (Jan 16) when the third round of the Burns Phlip is played off the white tees.
