Steve Russell joked that the main reason that he bothered to play on a sodden Saturday was the chance to win the jackpot.

It was a decision that paid a rich dividend as he not only won the match of the day in a canter but he scooped the pool with a pair of twos.

Only nine golfers were brave (or silly enough) to tee off in the rain which had left surface water still to drain from the greens and the rest of the course heavy and slippery.

No-one handled the difficult conditions better off the white tees than Steve who shot an often spectacular 81 off the stick for a net 67 and 17 points in the international stableford format for the day. Among the highlights of his round were not only birdies at the par three No 2 and 14, but an eagle at the par five No 10 and another birdie at the uphill No 4.

Aaron Kotua was another who mastered the course, finishing second with nine points with a net 69 and a two at No 11 as the rain lifted in the afternoon.

Warwick King, with four points, came in third.

Next Saturday (July 2) is the rescheduled finals of the Individual Matchplay and flight as well as another round of the Barkman Trophy and Shootout.
