Callum Hogg's recent honeymoon has also done wonders for his golf.

The newly married young doctor cruised around a sun drenched Waahi Taakaro course on Saturday (May 1) to record one of his best scores for some time in winning the first round of the Barkman Trophy.

The 23 handicapper's nett score of 72 off the blue tees was just enough to take the honours from Maurice Woodhouse on a countback.

However, those two were the only ones to play to their handicaps on what was a perfect autumn day for golf, proving yet again the back tees are as tough a challenge as any you will find in the region.

Jonathan Tuheke continued his solid recent form with a nett 73 to finish third.

Ian Hanford claimed fourth on countback from Lindsay Brooks and Peter Watson after all three came in with 74s. They were followed by Rangi Kohe and Steve Russell on 75 each. Dean Goodman, Dave Blake and Paul Tunnicliff rounded out the top 11 after shooting 76s.

Rangi and Ian shared the twos money with one each.

The day also doubled as the first round of the Shootout, with 12 players so far entered for the nett competition which is played over 14 rounds followed by a top 10 playoff. Each player must play at least eight rounds to be in with a chance of qualifying. Jonathan has set the early pace.

Next Saturday (May 8) is the semi-finals of the Brebde senior/junior, while the match of the day for those not involved is a par round off the white tees.
