What a difference playing off the white tees on a perfect spring day makes.
After struggling through the club champs qualifying rounds off the blue tees, most players enjoyed the easier conditions, with half the field playing under or to their handicaps.
Bryan Ramsey showed he was in good form leading into the club champs quarter-finals next week by amassing an impressive 42 stableford points to win the match of the day, which also carried Barkman Trophy points.
Neil McLaren pipped Maurice Woodhouse for second on countback after both totalled 40 points. Former club member Elton Netto showed he had lost no feel for his old course by shading Mike Murphy for fourth on countback after they finished with 39 points each. Paul Tunnicliff returned to form with 38 points to finish sixth. Peter Green, with 79 off the stick, and Warwick King were next on 37 points. They were followed by Richard Pearson, whose round included three birdies, Peter Watson and Rangi Kohe with 36 points each. Peter W shot the lowest gross of the day with a 78.
Rangi, Richard and Peter W shared the twos money.
Next Saturday (Oct 9) we are back to the blue tees for the quarter-finals (unless players have mutually agreed to play on another day), which sees Dean Goodman up against Jasper Broad-Kolff in the seniors, while Richard Pearson will play Jonathan Tuheke, Dave Blake will take on Steve Russell , Maurice Woodhouse and Paul Tunnicliff will do battle, and Lindsay Brooks will go head to head with Aaron Kotua in the intermediates.
In the Junior As, , Paul McCrae will play Warren Carey, Neil McLaren will be up against Ian Hanford, Callum Hogg will verse Bryan Ramsey, and Lewis Wilson and Warwick King will lock horns.
With the two top Junior B seeds Mike Murphy and Grant Fergusson getting byes, Alan Church will take on Steve Turnell in one of the quarter-finals, while Jim McMullan and Roma Elkington will contest the other.
All quarter-finals must be played before the semi-finals on October 16 and be played off the blue tees over 18 holes of match play with no shots given.
