The first round of qualifying for the NBS club champs rarely produces good golf.

And so it was on a sunny and still Saturday, with just four golfers playing under or to their handicaps off the blue tees.

Maybe it was some extra nerves, a bit of rust after the recent closure of the course, the long rough or having to walk longer on a layout restricted to seven holes because of flood damage.

Regardless, it had little effect on Mick Leggett whose season just seems to get better and better. The multiple winner shot 98 for an excellent net 67 to not only win the Barkman Trophy match of the day but put himself in the box seat to take the C&F Stroke title when it is completed next week. His round also made him an early favourite to top the junior B grade seedings.

New club captain Peter Green - who has only just recovered from knee surgery - showed he will be a force in the senior division with the best gross of the day, a 78, which included three birdies. His net 71 was the second best and keeps him in the hunt for Stroke honours.

Warwick King (98) pipped Phil Sellers (94) on countback for third after both finished on 72, with both getting off to a good start in their Junior A grade qualification.

Next were another junior A hopeful Bryan Ramsey (96) and junior B grader Greg Mann (102) with net 73 apiece.

They were followed by senior Keri Kotua (85) and one of the intermediate favourites, Paul Tunnicliff (93) on 76.

Ian Hanford (101, junior A), Steve Russell (92, intermediate) and Barry Rhodes (108, junior B) rounded off the top 11 with net 77s.

Peter Green and Steve Russell shared the twos spoils with birdies on No 11 one after the other.

The day also counted as a Shootout round, with Mick and Peter improving their net averages.

Next Saturday (Oct 1) is the second qualifying round of the club champs and the Stroke. It is doubles as Barkman Trophy and Shootout rounds and is again off the blue tees.
