Neil Howard’s good run of form continued on Thursday when he won the first round of the season-long Worley Trophy.

His fine net 31 off the front nine in hot, dry conditions was just enough to top a big field.

Ian Hanford and Phil Sellers shared second with net 32 each, while Gordon Combe was next on 33.

He was followed by Warren Green and Trevor Atkinson on 34 apiece and the trio of Paul McCrae, Chris Louth and John Shaw who came in with 35s. A group of five comprising Richard Pearson, Graham Strickett, Lloyd Moyle, Noel Shaw and Terry Kelso played to their handicap in recording 36s.

Surprisingly there was no twos, although Ian Hanford claimed the hidden hole to fatten his collect.

Next Thursday (Jan 26) is an Irish stableford off the back nine.

Meanwhile, Paul Tunnicliff can claim to be the club’s matchplay king after winning the Guthardt Cup on Wednesday with a 4/2 victory over fellow Golden Oldie Phil Sellers. It goes with Paul’s Individual Matchplay Trophy win for Saturday players last year. It is thought to be the first time one player has held both matchplay titles at the same time.

On paper Paul appeared to be up against it in his 18-hole against an in-form Phil, whom he had to give five shots. But Paul proved by far the steadier golfer on the day and was a commanding 4 up after nine holes. While Phil reduced the deficit, Paul quickly restored his lead through some tidy up and downs, including sinking a monster putt at No 14 for a birdie from off the front of the green. They finally shook hands on No 16 after Paul parred the hole.
