Noel Shaw has owned the Polly Pearce Memorial Trophy over the last two years and he has started the new season hellbent on a three-peat.

The Golden Oldies convener shrugged off a triple bogey on the opening hole to post a stunning net 28. Playing off a 13 handicap for the front nine in warm, still conditions, he shot a 41 off the stick which included numerous pars and a birdie to lay down an early challenge in the six-round competition.

His score was four better than Tom Kennedy and Andrew Dean who shared second with commendable net 32s.

There was a five-way tie for fourth between Phil Sellers, Barry Mitchell, Barry Rhodes, John Shaw and Ali Mawby who each carded 34.

They were followed by Paul McCrae, Ivan Guy and Heather Carey - who last week shot the equivalent of a net 27 - on 35 apiece on a day of generally excellent scoring.

John Shaw went home happy and richer after scoring the only two of the day as did Heather who took out the hidden hole.

Next Thursday (Feb 15) the Golden Oldies play the second round of the Worley Trophy, which will be a net plus putts round off the front nine, starting at 10am.
