Mick Leggett's golf shone as brightly as the sun on another glorious summer's day on Thursday.

The fast-improving 36.4 handicapper hot-footed it around the front nine at Waahi Taakaro in 47 for a splendid net 30 to head a big field in the first round of the Worley Cup.

On a day of excellent scoring, Rob Shand grabbed second with a net 31, while Barry Mitchell and the ageless Errol Guthardt shared third on 32.

Next were John McGougan (33) and the quintet of Paul Tunnicliff, Tom Weiss, Brian Clinton, Ivan Guy and Ray Blommaart who all recorded net 34s. They were followed by another group of five - Ian Hanford, Ray Hopgood, Andrew Dean, John Gibbons and Trevor Atkinson - who all came in with 35.

Bryan Ramsey had a lucrative collect after logging the only two of the day.

Next Thursday (Jan 27) is an Irish stableford off the back nine.

Meanwhile, hats off to one of our top veterans Richard Pearson who not once but twice this week completed the rare feat of shooting under his age. On Monday the fit-as 77-year-old shot 76 off the white tees. He followed that up with a 38 on Tuesday and a 75 on Thursday which consisted of an outward 39 and inward 36, which could have been a 35 but for a narrow birdie miss on No 18. As a result of all this excellent golf, Richard's handicap index has fallen from 10 to a career low of 8.4, which is a fantastic achievement. It proves once again that golf is a game for life and that practice certainly pays off. Congratulations RP.
