Golf course flood update

Hi fellow golfers,

Thank you for all the goodwill messages, photos, funny comments and offers of help.

It is much appreciated.

It’s been a hectic few days so I want to update you on how things are progressing and to urge patience as we work through the required process laid down by Nelson City Council to get their (and our) golf course surveyed for damage and a recovery plan put in place which Nelmac and the club are to jointly work on.

While we would all like to jump in to start the clean-up now so we can re-open as soon as possible, we will have to wait for permission to do so. However, club volunteers have managed to protect all affected greens by clearing them of silt and debris, however any further work will have to wait until we get approval.

The good news is that work is about to start to clear the concrete ford to allow vehicle access to the course which is vital given we no longer have any bridges we can use. Ford access  will allow the six unaffected holes on the course to be properly maintained, while No 6, No 8 and No 9/18 are cleaned up. Planning has also started to restore the water supply to the course, clubhouse and caretaker’s cottage.

We have been asked NOT to use the Maitai Valley Rd to visit the golf club until it is open to all traffic. Currently only residents and construction staff clearing the road of slips etc are allowed up there. If your golf gear is stored in our locker room and you need it, I can arrange for it to be delivered to you. Just let me know.

We want you to keep playing golf while our course is closed and thanks to the generosity of the district’s other golf courses you can:

You can play for free at Totaradale, Tasman, Golden Downs and Motueka, and for half price at Greenacres and Nelson. Please book your round in advance and provide your ID/playing number and remember to thank them by buying a drink/food at their bar. Just go to their websites to get their contact details and programme details.

Your management committee will be meeting next week to discuss how we can look after you further during this difficult time because we want to keep you as members and involved in our club and competitions etc.

And remember our club AGM is on Saturday September 24 at the clubhouse where there will be lots to talk about. Nominations for club patron, president, vice president, club captain and three management committee members have opened and will close on September 10 so get them in.

Feel free to email or ring me if you have any queries.

Happy golfing (somewhere else)

Peter Watson
