Isle caps off top season

Christmas came early for Andy Isle who was crowned NBS player of the year at the club’s annual prize-giving on Saturday (Nov 13).

It was the second time that NBS Waahi Taakaro’s lowest competition handicapper has won the award, adding to the title he received in 2015.

And the prize-money and plaudits didn’t stop there as he collected a rare jackpot with a pair of birdie twos as he helped his team comfortably win the end of season ambrose.

Andy’s player of the year award was built on his win in the season-long Barkman Trophy and victory in both the Senior Stroke and the NBS Senior Club Champs. He also put in a solid shift as No 1 in our Sloan Trophy team.

Dave Blake finished as runner-up in the player of the year stakes after a win in the Brebde senior/junior with Jim McMullan and seconds in the C & Legal Stroke, Intermediate Stroke and NBS Intermediate Club Champs.

Third was NBS Intermediate Club Champ and Intermediate Stroke winner Richard Pearson followed closely by NBS Junior B Club Champ and Junior B Stroke winner Mike Murphy.

Another multiple winner was Paul McCrae who captured the C & F Legal Stroke and Junior A Stroke on top of the Burns Philp Cup and Summer Fedex, both of which don’t count in the player of the year calculations. Barry Rhodes was also a double winner, taking out the Pat Melville Memorial and the coveted Individual matchplay title, as was Paul Tunnicliff, who added to his trophy haul with the Stubberfield Cup and a win with Brendan Doyle in the Cap-it-all Trophy.

And who could forget Warren Carey’s triumph in the NBS Junior A Club Champs after qualifying as eighth and last seed.

On Saturday – in a damp finish to the season – the Handy Andys took out the 10-team modified ambrose with an impressive score of 121.125 from Daisy’s Dogs (131.375) and the Four Wheelers (135.375). Thanks to Warwick King and the others who helped out on the day.

The summer season begins on November 27 with the first round of the Burns Philp Cup.
