Waahi Taakaro players dominated the district mixed vets tournament played on their home course on Wednesday (Oct 11).

On a pleasant day for golf, our players – as to be expected - filled eight of the top 12 men’s placings, with Barry Mitchell heading the field with 39 stableford points.

The 23-handicapper made hay on his front nine with an eye-catching 24 points before doing just enough on the back nine to take the top prize.

Sarel Nienaber (Greenacres) and Mick Leggett pushed him close with 38 points each to claim second and third respectively.

They were followed by Ray Hopgood (37) and a bunch on 36 which included Elton Netto (Totaradale), Chris Louth, Bryan Ramsey, Tom Kennedy, Max Parker (Greenacres), Paul McCrae, Robert Murray (Greenacres) and Grant Fergusson.

Korrin Black (Nelson) topped the small women’s field wih 34 stablefords.

The twos were shared by Robert, Mick, Elton and Lloyd Moyle with one each, while Lindsay Guy (Greenacres) won the straightest drive for women and Jack Denton for the men.

Robert - who shot the best gross of the day with an 81 - was closest to the pin on No 5, while no woman managed to hit the green on No 2.

This was the first district mixed vets we have held at Waahi Taakaro for two years after previous tournaments were cancelled because of flood damage. Now the clean-up is all but completed we hope to hold such events annually.

Thanks to all those who entered – we hope you enjoyed the day and the course.
