More club results for 20/9/26

Waahi Taakaro club members Graham Galt and Keri Kotua shone on Sunday (Sept 20) at different golf events.

Graham won his club champs quarterfinal in the intermediate grade, defeating third seed Jason Lee 3/2.

Graham went into the catch-up match as the slight underdog after qualifying in sixth spot, but he led from the start to turn one-up before winning three holes in a row early on the back nine to seize control. After a half, Jason fought back to win the next two to give himself an outside chance, only for Graham to close it out in style by birdieing No 16 to seal the win.

Meanwhile, Keri was one of the few golfers at the Tasman Quad at Greenacres to win all three of his matches.

Playing for the Nelson intermediate rep team against Marlborough, Buller Westland and a Tasman invitational team, Keri won both his Saturday matches 3/2 and 3/1 before battling to a 1-up win in very windy and difficult conditions on Sunday. It was a typically gutsy performance from one of our club’s best matchplay exponents.

His fellow club members didn’t fare so well. Pete Green won his first match convincingly but then suffered two close losses, while James Campion also finished with a one-win, two-loss record. Craig Barron, who was making his rep debut, found it tough going, losing all three of his matches.

The Nelson intermediate team finished third behind Marlborough, with the Tasman invitational team winning the division, However, Nelson took out the overall competition after its unbeaten senior team won comfortably.
