Our Old Hickory team showed a slight improvement in finishing fifth at Takaka on Thursday (May 13) in the latest round of the inter-club competition.

After getting the popgun twice in its last three starts for coming last, the team was under pressure to lift its game.

While far from convincing, it did manage to avoid the popgun again. Our team score of 120 stablefords wasn’t flash but was eight better than Greenacres who finished last and 14 behind victors Motueka.

Ian Hanford led our scoring with 32 points followed by Bryan Ramsey (31), Phil Sellers (30) and Richard Pearson (27). Tom Kennedy (26) and Graham Strickett (24) were the non-counters.

Despite perfect conditions for golf, many found the Takaka greens difficult to read, with a top individual score of 38 points and just two more on 36.

Motueka, with 134 points, finished four clear of Totaradale (130) with the home side Takaka (129) surprisingly managing only third. They were followed by Tasman (122), Waahi Taakaro (120), Nelson (117) and a woeful Greenacres (112).
